Mid Power LED EMC/PCT/Flip-Chip Fight for Market Share

LED package manufacturers are expanding EMC production capacity. After improvements to PCT lead frame materials, LED package manufacturers plan to introduce PCT products into the mid power market. Flip-chip products are also making their way in the 2014 mid power market.

With the LED lighting market booming and LEDs in backlight spec changes, the mid power spec market had taken center stage within the LED industry this year, already surpassing the high power market in initial output value. LED drivers with EMC lead frames can reach 1-2W power output which can supply the mid power and mid/high power LED market. LED package manufacturers are expanding EMC production capacity. After improvements to PCT lead frame materials, LED package manufacturers plan to introduce PCT products into the mid power market. Flip-chip products are also making their way in the 2014 mid power market.


EMC products have become a rising star this year amid the emerging mid power market. Nichia has released the popular EMC 757 series on the market this year. With EMC products able to be employed in direct-lit backlighting and the lighting market, as well as rapid price declines, LED package manufacturers have begun expanding EMC product development and production capacity.


Nichia has come out on top among LED package manufacture for EMC production capacity, with single month production reaching 800KK. Following close behind is Chinese LED package manufacturer Lighting Optoelectronics with 2700KK. Among Taiwanese LED package manufacturers, AOT single month peak production reached 1200KK. The recent acquisition of China Electric, GIO Optoelectronics has a single month production capacity of 80KK and Everlight reached 60KK. Each manufacturer plans to continue with EMC production capacity expansion in 2014.


PCT lead frame driver power has increased from 0.7W-1.2W through improvements by Taiwanese and Korean manufacturers. This has not only distanced PCT and PPA lead frames but also pushed PCT into the once EMC dominated 0.7W01.2W market. High cost/performance ratio (C/P) PCT products have also become an important mid power product line for some LED package manufactures in 2014.


Initial output value for the mid power market has already surpassed high power in 2013. Philips Lumileds originally focused on the high power market, but in 2013 turned their attention towards mid power. Philips Lumileds has already launched several mid power products and plans to also use a smaller flip chip with better lumens per area, wider beam angle, and five-sided emitter in the mid power market in 2014, showing how much importance the company places on the mid power market.

LT Journal of Analog Innovation V23N3 – October 2013 – Meet GreeLEDs are increasingly used in 24VAC and 12VAC lighting systems as an energy efficient and high performance alternative to halogen lamps.


Power converters that drive the LEDs should have a high power factor (above 90% in order to meet generally accepted green standards), should be efficient, use a minimal number of components and should run cool. They do not need isolation.


One solution that meets these requirements combines a rectifier bridge and a current-controlled synchronous step-up/step-down converter. Specifically, a synchronous 4-switch buck-boost converter can be paired with a 4-switch ideal diode rectifier bridge for high power LEDs. A lower power design can use a standard diode bridge.


Both solutions are shown here.


The LT3791 60V 4-switch synchronous buck-boost controller IC can drive constant current (either DC or pulsating) into a string of high power LEDs.


It features an output current feedback loop used to drive constant current through a string of LEDs, and a CTRL dimming input pin that can be tied to the 120Hz half-sine wave output of a rectifier bridge to create a high power factor pulsating LED current output.


The LT4320 is an ideal diode rectifier bridge that drives four MOSFETs in place of four typical rectifier diodes for highest efficiency conversion of the 60Hz 24VAC input to 24VRMS 120Hz pulsating output. When currents reach 5A and higher, the diodes in a standard rectifier bridge dissipate significant power and heat up.


The diode rectifier bridge helps high power AC applications run efficient and cool by driving low resistance external N-channel FETs.

Figure 1 shows an LED driver that operates with 98.1% power factor directly from 24VAC. It can drive up to 25V of LEDS with 120Hz pulsating power with LED current peaking at 4.4A.


At 120Hz, the pulsing of the light is not detectable by the human eye and is seen as constant brightness. The high power factor 24AC input voltage and current waveforms are shown in Figure 2. The 10Hz pulsating LED current waveforms are shown in Figure 3.


LED current foldback with the CTRL pin voltage is used to achieve the high power factor. The maximum LED current is set by RLED at 4.5A, but the CTRL pin monitors the post-rectifier 120Hz PVIN input voltage and shapes the LED current waveform to match the input.


When the input drops below the shutdown pin threshold, the IC goes into shutdown and switching stops. The LED current trails off as the output capacitors are discharged and soon enough, the input rises above the shutdown pin threshold and the buck-boost converter starts back up. With the CTRL pin folding back the LED current at low input, start-up is not harsh and inrush currents do not affect the high power factor.


The 24VAC pulsating LED driver converter in Figure 1 delivers approximately 60W of LED lighting at 94% efficiency.


This is roughly equivalent to 600W of halogen lighting replacement without using lead, mercury, argon, and Xenon or krypton gases.


The four synchronous switches of the converter and those of the ideal diode bridge are responsible for the high efficiency.


Photo above shows the circuit components remaining cool despite the 60W conversion. The components have less than 24°C temperature rise, showing that there is plenty of room to spare for even higher power applications. A standard rectifier bridge would produce about a 50°C temperature rise and run several efficiency points lower.


Total efficiency is calculated by measuring the input power, the power factor, and the delivered output power separately. The values of 63.0W real input power, 64.4W apparent input power and 98.1% power factor are measured with an HP 6812A AC power source.

Measurement of the output power is a bit more complex. A current probe and oscilloscope are used to capture the pulsing current and voltage waveforms at the output of the converter.


From these waveforms, the converter output RMS current and voltage is calculated for the on-time (tON) of the LED.


The on-time output power is:

POUT(ON) = VRMS(ON) • IRMS(ON)


Output power is zero during LED off-time, where the current is zero. The output power of 60W is calculated via a simple duty cycle equation:

POUT = POUT(ON) • tON • 120Hz.

Overall efficiency = output power divided by real input power.


The circuit in Figure 4 is a 24W pulsating LED driver that operates from 24VAC input. Because the power level here is less than half of the 60W LED driver in Figure 1, the rectifier bridge shown in Figure 4 is made from four discrete Schottky diodes, instead of ideal diodes.

The trade-offs for simplicity are slightly lower efficiency and additional heat dissipation.


The principals of the 24W circuit are the same as the 60W circuit and the two operate in the same manner. Efficiency of the 24W circuit is 90%, lower than the 94% achieved by the 60W circuit. Nevertheless, this loss is acceptable due to the overall lower power, making the temperature rise in the discrete rectifier bridge components comparable between the two. With the discrete diode rectifier bridge, the components only heat up to 49°C as shown in Figure 7, well within the requirements of most high power LED drivers.


For higher efficiency, simply replace the discrete rectifier with a LT4320-based rectifier. In general, as power levels and temperatures rise, the need for synchronous rectification in both the converter and rectifier goes up.

LED lights can be a great gift to the holiday decorator. Even though they cost more than other types, they last longer, produce far less heat and use less energy.


The letters stand for “light-emitting diode” (but if you’re like some of my neighbors, they might more appropriately stand for “love elaborate displays.”) Unlike incandescent bulbs, LEDs are solid-state. There’s no filament that heats up with wasteful thermal radiation. Instead, light is released when electrical current excites electrons in the diode.


Just in time for the peak decorating season, here’s a stocking full of tidbits about LED lights, compiled by our researchers and based on interviews with highly rated lighting and electrical experts and other sources:


Plan to spend about four times more for a string of LED lights than for traditional bulbs. However, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, a typical strand of incandescent lights may last three years, while a comparable strand of LEDs can last 20 years or more.


An LED bulb generally consumes 75 percent less energy than its incandescent counterpart.


You can connect up to 25 strands of lights end-to-end and not worry that you’ll blow a fuse.


Size matters: Earlier versions of holiday light bulbs began with what are known as C6 bulbs, where the C stands for “cone-shaped” and the 6 refers to the diameter of the bulb in eighths of an inch. Modern versions of the C6 are strawberry-shaped bulbs often used indoors or draped around doorways. C7 and C9 bulbs are commonly hung along rooflines or wrapped around trees.


Popular LED holiday bulb types include the globe-shaped G series, or T, which are small tubes. Mini-tube LEDs are recommended for indoor Christmas trees.


Other types of LED lights that can make your holiday bright include rope lights, which are encased in flexible plastic tubing, and net lighting, which can be draped over a bush or tree, avoiding the usual tangled mess.


Colors of LED holiday lights are as varied as their incandescent counterparts. Newer versions can match the warm, candle-like hues of incandescents.

After a year full of strife in 2013, the LED industry has finally seen signs of market rebound. As China gradually establishes national LED standards, leading enterprises have also increased R&D. The LED industry’s oversupply frozen state is gradually being melted away, and the industry is opening up to a new phase of explosive growth, according to a Chinese Business News report.

Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology (GDSTC) Head inspection case reveals LED industry’s government subsidiary “mess”


How close a local officer and industry can be, might beyond your imagination.


GDSTC Head Li Xinghua is under inspections due to serious violations, according to Guangzhou Disciplinary Inspection Committee (GDIC) press release published on July 26, 2013. The Chinese LED industry has been in heated discussion on this issue, with those in the industry estimating there will be further industry shakeups, with wide extent of involvements. There are even those in the industry that believe, the Guangdong Province’s LED lighting for public area plans will be affected.


China Business News interviewed many LED industry insiders recently. Those in the industry recognized the Guangdong Province government’s promotion and contributions to the development of the LED industry, but noted the lack of transparency in the industry for applying for government subsidies. This has resulted in companies to put on pretentious guises for their personal gain, and to obtain further subsidies.

The GDIC press release has ignited social discussion in China. Many in the LED industry have used Weibo.com, Alighting.co blogs, and other public social platforms to voice their opinions. A lot of those in the industry are speculating whether the incident will result in the end of Guangdong Province’s three-year promotion of public LED lighting policy. Some in the industry have also joked, “we are uncertain as to how many people have gone sleepless during this period.”


Compared to individuals, companies have remained rather silent.


Guangdong has more than 6,000 LED companies, but only two to three percent are able to receive subsidies. Many of these are listed and domestic companies. What exactly are large companies with the “bid-awarded enterprise” halo thinking about? And what have been some of the effects?


Unveiling corrupt LED industry’s “unwritten rules”


Corruption is coined as “political tumor”, and is a serious issue in the LED industry. Some government officials, who hope to achieve personal goals, have been promoting labor intensive and costly projects. Somes have been trading under the table to increase their income, while others have fallen at the feet of women and were later reported. China’s road to corruption became more evident starting from China’s five-year plan in 1982. A review of China’s anti-corruption measures and struggles over the last 30 years reveal China’s anti-corruption evolution. Chinese rulers have never loosened their grip on fighting back corruption, or their study of anti-corruption methods.


In regards to government officials corrupt and unjust conduct, the party will impose strict rules, and tighten its grip on issuing punishments, said Chinese President Xi Jingping during the plenary session at the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Jan. 22, 2013. The party should insist on beating down both “tigers and flies”. However, for the LED industry, there has always been corruptive bidding and subsidiary practices that have not been suppressed. Are not these conditions also unwritten rules that have been difficult for industry insiders to avoid?

People are familiar with the corrupt union of politicians and businesses. When angered people call this collusion, corruption and graft. Many times the public recognizes this as a social phenomenon, an unwritten economic rule. This has currently become a very sensitive topic in the lighting industry, which is based on the blurred boundaries between the lighting industry and government work division.


Li’s inspection has aroused much public interest. Whether its Shanxi’s 2 billion street light’s congregated tenure, many companies failed bids, to Shenzhen’s termination of the LED industry’s seven year development project; all these have revealed collusion between government officials and businesses. Corruption which has transcended from a century old issue to the modern era has become bad option that companies have taken as a matter of fact. Companies must be organized by governments, founded through joint government ventures, or monitored by the government and operated by businessman. To conclude, the LED industry development, specifically the lighting industry’s business model has been hovering between collusion models, and marked with uncertainty.

David Richards of Canberra, Australia has covered his property with so many lights his house is no longer visible. Taking over a month to set up, 502,156 lights were strung up around Mr. Richards and his family’s property. The spectacular display has earned them the prestige of most number of Christmas lights in the Guinness World Record book.


With half a million lights decorating his home, Mr. Richards’ electricity bill will likely skyrocket an additional US $2,300 (NT $68,000). However, aside from wanting to break a world record, the decorations are also in part to raise money for charity. The family was able to raise US $71,000 in 2011.


“I have always loved Christmas. Having the Christmas lights with the community coming in and sharing it is a time when you get to know people you probably should know better,” said Mr. Richards.

Taiwan-based Epistar is expanding its LED wafer and chip production capacity at KFES Lighting (Xiamen) – a joint venture (JV) with China-based China Electronics in southeastern China – from nine MOCVD sets currently to 30 in 2014, according to sources with the LED supply chain.

The JVs are expected to account for 10-15% of Epistar’s consolidated revenues, the company indicated.

The dispersed LED lighting market is rewriting market game rules. LED manufacturers are hoping to overcome consumer congestion which led to limited bargaining space. With the arrival of a new era in LED lighting, manufacturers hope to enjoy more stable gross profit performance and larger space for price negotiations.


LED lighting demand is estimated to surpass that of LED backlight in 2014. LED product price drops have contributed largely to increased consumer usage, said the financial service firm. Current cost recovery for commercial luminaries A19 and PAR28 has already been reduced to a year or less. LED bulb price has room to drop 30 percent by 2015 which will attract more consumers to replacement LED bulbs economic benefits. The LED industry welcomes the new lighting era. J.P. Morgan forecasts penetration rate in Nov. 2013 will reach around 11 percent, and only reached 5 percent last year. LED lighting penetration is hoped to be over 20 percent before 2015.


LED lighting demands will bring structural changes to the LED industry, said J.P. Morgan. The LED lighting market is more dispersed than the LED backlight market where consumers are highly concentrated. The top three global lighting manufactures Philips, Osram, and GE make up 30spercent of the global market share. This dispersed nature if the LED lighting market will bring more revenue and bargaining space than LED backlight products in the past.

Manufacturers thus need to input man power and R&D resources for an extended period of time. Nonetheless, once the supply chain is infiltrated, product price, gross profit performance, and orders are all stable.


According to market research organization LEDinside, car headlights and DRL are in a LED introduction phase, where single unit prices remain high. This causes prices to drop more rapidly. 2013 experienced a price reduction of 16 percent and 13 percent respectively. Other automotive lights such as taillights and dashboard lights had a steadier decline in price for 2013 with prices dropping 5 percent and 1 percent respectively.


Following recent strict carbon emission regulations issued by the EU, LED automotive light standards have also become stricter but still continue to grow. In 2013 the EU issued new regulations that by 2020 carbon dioxide emission by all new vehicles for every kilometer must decrease from the current 130 grams down to 95 grams.


It is predicted that use of LED lighting by international automotive manufacturers will increase. LED manufacturers still need time in order to cultivate and earn trust and long-term orders from global big named automotive manufacturers.

Honglitronic Monthly Package Production Reaches Historical High at 800KK

According to sources, Honglitronic’s monthly production rate was about 500KK in 2012. The company has only used two production factories out of a total of four, if all four factories re activated it can reach a monthly production capacity of 2,000KK, said the company Chairman Li Guoping in March 2013.


The company hopes to extend into LED industry’s downstream, and use its rule of using its advantages to compensate each other to take into account both synergy and growth. The company is actively seeking high quality targets to fulfill the company’s integration and leap developments.


From white light LED package manufacturers current situation, Guotai Junan Securities analyst believes the company’s current production capacity remains limited, and its LED company’s profits remain low. It is possible that profits will not show up till end of 2014. The LED industry will be developing market channels in 2013 to 2014, hence costs remain relatively high.


The global LED lighting market penetration rate is rising rapidly, according to LEDinside, a subsidiary of global market research institute TrendForce latest silver member report. According to the institute’s statistics, LED lighting industry will be worth US$ 17.8 billion in 2014. Overall, the LED lighting product shipment volume reached 2.67 billion units, and shipment volume grew 68 percent compared to 2013.

  • Picture(1),1st connection method: triode will not connect to output of IC, output current reach 30Ma,output can connect to two-ways, ensure that the output voltage must be less than 6V.

Sammi Gros has invented a new type of LED “Tail Lights.” They are not your usual LED tail lights for automotive applications, but six LED double sided strands clipped to horse tails. According to Kickstarter’s product introduction, Gros decided to launch safety lights for equestrian lovers after being hit by a car during a riding trip with a friend four years ago. The safety lights for horses aims to help avoid potential motor accidents for riders.

We live in an era where many consumer electronics have silly names, often with lowercase i’s, an abundance of z’s or a lack of vowels. But not Tail Lights. Because that’s just what they are, a set of LED strips that strap onto horse tails, giving the animals and their riders improved visibility and enabling owners to pimp their living rides.


At first glance, the idea of Tail Lights might be as silly as its name is plain. But it may end up saving lives. Sami Gros was moved to invent Tail Lights when she and and a friend were hit by a car while they were on horseback, even though both of them were already wearing reflectors and were even in a town where horseback riding was commonplace.


Tail Lights have two main parts. Its CPU and battery are in a case small enough to be stowed in practically any saddle bag, while the LED strips themselves are connected by a cable to the battery. The strips are waterproof and will be available in different colors. Tail Lights has two brightness modes as well as a strobe mode.

All you need is a LED Strip, a dc 5v battery.

e.g.



  • One 500cm LED strip, cut it into two, one 50cm strip for making the dog collar, and the other 450cm strip for the dog leash.

  • Wear your dog with the collar, and twine the 450CM LED strip with the existed leash.

  • Why twining, can’t the LED strips be used as leashes directly? Because these LED strips may not as strong as your dogs.(Maybe it’s ok with a tiny cute Pekingese, not never try it on a large-sized dog, e.g. a husky dog.)

ASP for 40W equiv and 60W equiv LED bulbs has already dropped down to US $10 in most regions, according to observations by LEDinside. LEDinside forecasts 2014 LED lighting product shipment volume to reach 1.32 billion units, a growth of 68 percent from 2013. 40W equiv. LED bulb price decline most evident in UK


Global 40W equiv. LED bulb ASP dipped 2.3 percent to US $15.8, with price decline most evident in the UK region. The lowest prices for 40W equiv. LED bulbs had already dropped below US $10 in all the surveyed regions during October.


UK price declined 11 percent and pre-existing product prices steadily decreased, with largest decline seen in Samsung and Osram. Price for 40W equiv LED bulb in UK dropped as low as US $8.1. U.S. ASP for October slid 5.7 percent. Pre-existing product prices steadily decreased and lowered prices for new items introduced this month. U.S. region 40W equiv LED bulb price dropped as low as US $9.


Global 60W equiv. LED bulb price fluctuates


Global 60W equiv. LED bulb ASP rose slightly 1.2 percent to US $21.6. With certain areas affected by exchange rate and ending of promotion for low-priced LED bulbs, 60W equiv LED bulb ASP increased slightly.


Price difference narrowed as the lowest prices of 40W equiv LED bulbs alldropped below US $10 in the surveyed regions


Price decrease in October for 40W equiv LED bulbs was more evident with brands from each region dropping prices below US $10, and narrowing different region products’ price gap, observed LEDinside. Price decrease was especially evident in UK where prices for certain pre-existing high priced items dipped and prices for already low priced items continued to drop. Osram, Samsung, and LG all have products that are priced close to US $10 in the UK region. In the U.S. region, aside from low priced bulbs launched by Cree and Walmart recently, Philips and Ecosmart have also released products priced below US $10 for a long time.

Showa Denko K.K. has developed a light source similar to blue LEDs through a combination of violet, red, yellow, blue, and green LED chips, according to a recent report by Nikkei on November 21st. The light produced can reduce current LED blue light emitted by 95% and are less harmful to the eye than blue LEDs.


Although price for the new LED chips is two to three times that of current blue LEDs, it is expected prices for LCD panels or lighting that use these chips will only go up by 20-30 percent. Global blue LED monthly production volume is around 10 billion. Showa Denko forecasts replacement demands to be around 5 percent.

  • 2. T-1000S one TTL(SPI) signal and one RS485 signal port output,can control 2048 pixels;

  • 3. When the chip for LED is single line chip just with data, then just need to be connected with DAT and GND of the controller. If the chip for LED is double line chip with DAT and CLK, then need to be connected with DAT, CLK, and GND of the controller.

  • Before copy files to SD card ,The SD card must be formatted as FAT format

  • The SD card in controller can not be hot-swappable, plug the SD card every time, you must first disconnect the power supply.



Trouble shooting


Question 1:After power, the T-1000S ERROR indicator has been flashing without display output

Answer:The ERROR indicator has been flashing means the controller did not read the card correctly, possible problems:



  • ①SD card is empty, with no effect file.

  • ②The effect file in the SD card and the controller model are not match, please choose correct

  • controller model in LedEdit and then re-create the effect file *led.

  • ③SD card did not format to FAT before copy effect files.

  • ④Please check the supply power voltage, the controller can be individually powered to exclude

  • power reasons

  • ⑤Changing the SD card and then test to exclude the possibility of a bad SD card


Question 2: The controller is powered on, the indicator is normal, but no effect change in lighting

Answer: The reasons for this are as follows:



  • ① Check if the lighting′s signal line and the controller connected correctly

  • ② If the TTL signal is received, the lamp and the controller must be common ground, that means connect the lighting′s and the controller′s ground together

  • ③ Check if the model chose during making display files on the SD card match the chips used in the lighting
